Investing in the Seafood Supply Chain: The Pepper and Community Catch Partnership

At Community Catch, our mission is simple but ambitious: to connect small-scale fisheries with markets that value sustainability, equity, and long-term resilience. Through the support of Sea Pact and our collaboration with Pepper, we’re beginning to bridge the gap between community-based fisheries and the digital infrastructure that can help them thrive.

Why this partnership matters

Both companies exist to bolster the independent:

  • Shared vision for better seafood supply chains: Pepper’s technology platform helps food distributors digitize and streamline their operations. By supporting seafood distributors with catch-weight pricing, real-time inventory, and traceability features, Pepper is investing in the same future we envision: one where sustainable, small-scale fisheries are better connected to the market.

  • Amplifying small-scale fisheries: While Community Catch is a global program - the specific Sea Pact grant project focuses on creating pathways for small-scale fisheries in Indonesia and Mexico to access improvement support across social responsibility and environmental sustainability and linkages to credible markets. Pepper’s network offers exactly the kind of digital distribution channels that can scale these efforts.

As Linda Wood, CEO at Community Catch says, “From small-scale fishers and fisheries that are often overlooked to independent processors and markets that serve vital parts of the supply chain - We’re all about levelling the playing field so small-scale fisheries can access all markets."

The Community Catch Standard has been specifically developed for small-scale fisheries. As social and environmental issues are both important, and closely linked, in many small-scale fisheries, our Standard includes both of these.

What the Sea Pact grant enables

  • With Pepper’s additional funding support through Sea Pact, we are piloting a model for connecting fisheries to support organizations, consultants and buyers, testing protocols that could one day be replicated globally.

  • This includes self-assessments, improvement roadmaps, and market matchmaking - all designed to help small fisheries gain recognition and build stronger livelihoods.

Pepper in the Seafood Industry

  • Digital infrastructure: Pepper’s tools reduce friction in the seafood supply chain, making it easier for distributors and buyers to confidently source improved or certified seafood.

  • Market differentiation: By working with us, Pepper creates opportunities for their distributors to stand out with traceable, sustainability-focused products.

  • Scalable impact: Together, we can expand the benefits of this model to more fisheries, more distributors, and ultimately, more communities.

As our partner, Pepper remains committed to the seafood industry - just check out what a different Pepper partner had to say on their investment:

“ The simple fact that Pepper is now a part of the National Fisheries Institute, and Pepper is a sponsor of Sea Pact.. That means a lot to us in the seafood industry because we know that you guys are now listening to the issues that we have as a global industry and trying to understand how to better help this industry as it changes.

Looking ahead

Our collaboration with Pepper is still in its early stages, but the potential is clear. By combining Community Catch’s expertise in small-scale fishery improvements with Pepper’s digital backbone for food distribution, we’re opening doors for fisheries that might otherwise be left behind.

Community Catch recognise small-scale fisheries need recognition and the markets want assurance, and we are perfectly placed to help. Combining digital infrastructure with advisory networks and storytelling improves engagement and trust among both fishers and buyers.

Sea Pact’s support allows us to test, learn, and refine this model, and with partners like Pepper, we’re confident we can turn pilot projects into lasting, scalable change.
